    Drawing/Painting Lessons

     for ADULTS & TEENS*
    * Teens (age 12-17) must be registered by responsible adult

    Instructor:  Mike Gillespie

    March 10, 17, 24

    10:00 AM - 12:00 Noon

     FEE:  $60 for 3 classes

All fees paid directly to instructor at 1st class

Beginner to Intermediate - the class will focus on building the structure of a head using limited values.  The idea is to learn to see mass before line, as a preparation for painting and to achieve the illusion of three-dimensional form. The emphasis on value (darks and lights) starting with charcoal and a few pastels avoids the complication of color for less experienced students, but our selection can render adequate color for a portrait study.

At first, outlined heads will be provided on pastel paper, on which the student will work to place the correct values as seen on a color photograph of the model. Some instruction in comparative measurement, to achieve a likeness, will be included.

Paper, charcoal, and some pastels will be provided initially. Students may then work in a medium they are experienced with.

Class is limited to 8 students.

The 13th Annual Paint Historic Waxahachie is open to any artist 18 and over.  Work submitted should reflect the best quality of your plein air painting.  In the spirit of plein air and to Level the field" of competition, we ask that all art be completed in the field (no studio touch-up).  Artists must agree to paint a minimum 2 days (or sessions) on location during the official 7 day paint week, May 4th through 13th.  Canvas, board or paper must be authenticated (stamped) prior to painting.  Artists are required to submit a minimum of 2 paintings for the exhibition and sale.

Painting locations include (but not limited to) historic homes, the Waxahachie Courthouse Square and surrounding Historic District, our city park, and a 5-mile hiking/biking trail that runs through town, plus special access to private properties.

The paint out area throughout historic Waxahachie is selected to give artists plenty of exposure and opportunity for sales.  Our event publication, “Collector’s Guide to a Paint Out” is designed to promote and market the artists, their art and the event.  Paint Historic Waxahachie 2018 is sponsored by the Ellis County Art Association, a 501(c)3 non profit corporation. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of art will benefit Ellis County Art Association community fine art programs.

The painted floral requires a balance of spontaneity and accuracy, a perfect subject to practice adding energy to all of your paintings. Learn about choosing a subject, composition, values, color temperature, simplification, how to start and when to stop. Each day will include a full demonstration followed by opportunities to create multiple paintings with frequent one-on-one instruction.

"I believe that art is the act of creation. The result, whether it is a painting, sculpture, photograph etc., is simply a record of the creation experience. My approach is to free myself from preconceived visual beliefs and interpret the world directly before me. In so doing, I rediscover the colors, textures and values of everyday life that we otherwise take for granted. This is what drives me to paint and what I encourage in my students.

My art is the product of diligence in practice. I do not believe in talent. I believe that all of us have the potential to create art, if we choose to dedicate ourselves to the pursuit."
